Documenting your biodiversity efforts

We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis where demands and expectations to protect biodiversity are creating new conditions for our urban development, construction and land management, as well as for companies to report transition plans and objectives for biodiversity protection in their strategy and business model.

One of the ESRS standards, ESRS E4, directly addresses biodiversity and ecosystems. This includes identifying threats to biodiversity, assessing associated risks, and implementing actions to minimize impacts while promoting biodiversity. Sweco has experience assisting companies in understanding and implementing the requirements of ESRS E4, as well as documenting and quantifying their biodiversity efforts—from initial analysis to executing concrete actions and monitoring the outcomes. Reporting should be based on clear objectives and indicators that can demonstrate the company’s progress and contribution to biodiversity.

Reporting should be based on clear objectives and indicators that effectively demonstrate the company’s progress and contributions to biodiversity. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and biodiversity expertise, we ensure that knowledge is systematically gathered, shared, and integrated into reporting.
We can also help you develop a biodiversity strategy and integrate biodiversity objectives into your overall sustainability reporting.

Gain insight into the overall biodiversity footprint

At Sweco, we offer a comprehensive assessment of the biodiversity impact of construction projects. We use the latest methods and tools to measure the biodiversity footprint of projects throughout their life cycle, from the immediate environment of the construction site to the less visible impacts of material production and the building’s energy consumption. This insight is crucial in order to focus on the areas where biodiversity efforts can deliver the greatest benefit. It is important to recognise and manage the off-site environmental impacts associated with material production and operational energy in construction projects. We will assist you in mapping and reducing these impacts.

What is CSRD? CSRD is the abbreviation of the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, a new European legislation requiring companies to report on their sustainability performance. The purpose of CSRD is to increase the transparency and comparability of sustainability reporting across the EU.

What is ESRS? ESRS is the abbreviation of European Sustainability Reporting Standards, and refers to the mandatory European standards for sustainability reporting, developed in accordance with the CSRD. ESRS provides a common framework and guidelines for companies to report on their sustainability performance.

To whom does CSRD apply? From January 2024, all large companies and all listed companies with more than 500 employees must start reporting in accordance with CSRD and ESRS. This includes companies in all sectors, including industry, finance, retail, and services.

What does CSRD and ESRS compliance entail? CSRD and ESRS compliance requires companies to collect, analyse, and report data on their sustainability performance in accordance with mandatory European standards. This includes reporting on climate change, environmental, social and governance issues as well as biodiversity and ecosystems in particular (ESRS E4).
